Some guests stay at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge for the trails or the golf or the dark skies. Some stay for a dinner.
What it is
A private dinner with Chef Wi is a four-course meal served in The Tasting Post, inside the historic WPA-era Lodge building. It takes about three hours. This is slow food and slow dining. Nothing is rushed, and the meal is the evening.
What it is not
It is not a restaurant with a long menu. The menu is limited, made from scratch, and changes every week. The food is what we call rustic worldly food: simple, honest, and drawn from many places. And these are the only dinners we serve in the Lodge at any given time, as we do not operate a traditional restaurant.
A dinner for every season
Private dinners are available all year, and the day around the dinner changes with the season.
Summer and fall. Spend the day outside on the Lodge’s 600 acres and about 15 miles of trails. Hike, trail run, or mountain bike. Walk a round of hickory golf on the historic course (the golf season runs June 1 through October 15). Fish or paddle, watch for wildlife and birds, or take in the fall colors, which are usually best from the last week of September through the first two weeks of October. Then come inside to The Tasting Post, with the weekly menu reflecting what the season offers. After dinner, step outside for stargazing under the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park.
Winter. Snowshoe or cross-country ski the groomed trails, which are open December 15 through March 31, weather permitting. Choose a moonlit snowshoe hike near the full moon, or watch for the northern lights near the new moon. Guests also stay at the Lodge to downhill ski at Mt. Bohemia, less than 15 miles away. Come in from the cold to a warm, slow dinner with Chef Wi. Winter lodging guests also receive complimentary lunches and take-out dinners from December 15 through March 31, so a private dinner is a special evening on top of an already well-fed stay.
Whichever season you choose, the dinner pairs well with a day spent getting closer to nature.
What you learn
Chef Wi talks with you about where the ingredients come from and how each dish is made. Education is part of every experience at the Lodge, and the table is no exception. Expect to leave knowing more about your food than when you sat down.
How to book
- Private dinners are available to cabin guests, by advance reservation only.
- Reserve at least two weeks ahead. Many guests reserve their dinner two to three months ahead, so plan early, especially for winter weekends. The chef decides each evening whether she can host a private dinner, so the earlier you ask, the better.
- Call 906-289-4403, extension 3, or email dining@keweenawresort.com.
- Pricing is posted on the weekly menus.
- Dinners are held in The Tasting Post.
