What is an affogato?
Affogato means “drowned” in Italian. It is a scoop of gelato with a hot shot of espresso poured over it at the counter. The gelato melts into the espresso, and you eat it with a spoon, then drink what is left.
The Affogato Bar sits in the Great Room of the Lodge building at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, at the curved wood bar in front of the river-stone wall. Every scoop is Keweenaw Gelato, made in small batches by Chef Wi.
The Gelato
Chef Widad “Wi” Mueller learned gelato-making in Italy in 2011 and founded Rollin’ Gelato in 2016. Today she makes Keweenaw Gelato at the Lodge, with one standard for every batch: bold, vibrant, and balanced flavors.
Yes, vegetables. Chef Wi treats the garden like the orchard: sweet corn, beets, squash, carrots, rhubarb, and cucumber all become gelato or sorbetto when they are in season.
Read more about the chef and see the full seasonal flavor calendar at KeweenawGelato.com.
Menu
The menu is short on purpose. Gelato is made fresh, in amounts sized to what we expect to serve, so when a flavor runs out, it is gone for the day.
