Kay Oliver has made clay vases for the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.
Peaceful snowy afternoons, broad beams erected by our ancestors, Copper Harbor conglomerate lining cold streams and sacred spaces filled with trees; these are the things that stand out in my memories of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.
With this collection of vases I strive to capture images and forms that evoke biking, cross country skiing and trail hikes throughout this magnificent segment of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The color palette reminds us of the sandstone, timber and lichen that surrounds us when we have the opportunity to find ourselves in the northern tip of Michigan.
Pottery as a representation of our surroundings is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression. As an artist I appreciate both the functionality and endurance of ceramics. It is my hope that these pieces help you connect to this landscape and to our hard- working forebears who built this lodge, mined this land and mapped these waters.
