The Upper Peninsula Dark Sky Festival returns to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge on April 8-10, 2027. It is the one time each April that the Lodge opens its doors, and it is timed to the April new moon so the sky is as dark as it will be all spring.
Why the dates matter
The festival follows International Dark Sky Week and the April new moon. A new moon means no moonlight washing out the stars, which is why the dates move a little from year to year. In 2027 the festival falls on April 8-10.
Why the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge
The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is the headquarters of the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park. The property covers 600 acres, and it is surrounded by roughly 32,000 acres owned by The Nature Conservancy. There is very little light for miles. Our solar red lights keep paths usable without ruining night vision, and red flashlights are available during Lights Out! periods.
What to expect
As with everything at the Lodge, education is woven into the experience. The speakers have been set for the 2027 festival, with their bio and topics to be posted over the next couple of months. Plan on learning something about the sky, about light pollution, and about why dark skies matter for wildlife and for people.
Planning your stay
- The Lodge is closed during April except for the festival, so this is a rare chance to stay in April.
- All lodging is by advance reservation. Cabins in the golf-course side are heated, and winter-style conditions are possible in April. Dress in layers.
- Stargazing is best from 7 pm to 7 am. Bring warm clothing and a chair or blanket.
- Cabins book early for the festival. Make a decision, not a comparison: you will need to call to make the cabin reservation as online booking is not available during April.
Come for the festival, stay for the dark.
