December 15, 2024: Moonlit Snowshoe Hike Recap

Snow is on the ground for the 2024-2025 winter, with 64.25 inches so far this winter. With the snow on the ground, December 15th offered cabin guests the ability to enjoy snowshoeing during the day and the night at the resort.

For the night snowshoeing activities on December 15th we offered our first scheduled moonlit snowshoe hike for this winter season.

December 15th was the night of the full moon. The previous two nights had offered a bright moon over the snow. However, on the evening of December 15th we experienced cloud cover. Even though there was cloud cover, the moon was bright enough to shine through and attendees did not have to use their red-light flashlights.

Led by KML team member Chris Guibert, the group spent about 2 hours on the trail, hiking 2-3 miles around the Lodge property on the Adventurer snowshoe route. The group started hiking at 7pm, and finished around 9pm. The temperature was above freezing, at 36 degrees. There was a slight breeze.

The cabin guests that joined in on the hike had traveled from Long Island in New York to experience the night skies.

They stayed in cabin 11 for 4 nights and were hoping for to see the Northern Lights during there stay. The Northern Lights did not show up, but they did experience several nights with clear skies to see the stars and the bright moon — just not on the evening of the snowshoe hike.

The guests adapted with their snowshoe guide, Chris. And as one of our former team members, Amy Oestrich, would say, “when we adapt, we just may experience something new”. The guest learned something new, and as they said, we haven’t experienced a snowshoe hike at night.

The group used the new Barebones flashlight (provided to them in their cabin) and borrowed 3 small red lights. All 4 participants used Tubbs snowshoes provided by the Lodge.
