Golf: Aerating and Top Dressing the Greens

This week, September 14-18, 2020, the golf course maintenance crew will be aerating and top dressing the greens on the golf course.

We still have good weather to play golf at the top of the Keweenaw, so some golfers are questioning why we are aerating the greens at this time. They would like to continue to have a quality putting surface to play on.

The reason for performing the aerating is because of the good weather. We should not aerate when there is poor weather (e.g. rain, snow, etc.). We need to take advantage of this weather when we can. Prior to 2019, aerating was pushed back as far into the fall season as possible. As a result, aerating would not take place every year.

If we are to continue to have quality greens on the Lodge golf course we need to improve the probability the golf course maintenance crew we can do a quality job. Aerating in mid-September is part of that strategy. This strategy also means greens will be ready earlier in June (rather than in mid-July if not later).

If you are still wanting to play this week, the golf course will be open during the aerating and top dressing process. Golfers will need to play around the green which the crew is working on, and then come back and play that hole or play another hole to ensure you get your full 9- or 18-hole round completed.

August 2020: fun.joyous.adventuresome Team Member Pic

Each month we highlight a picture from the Lodge based upon our core values. Here is the August 2020 fun.jouyous.adventuresome team member picture of the month.  This month Janee Artrip posed for a picture in the one of the historic fireplaces, with the sign of the times — a mask. Trust us, she is smiling under the mask.

This picture was taken as we had a break in the traffic on a Saturday morning, before the dine-in services opened up (at 11am).  July has been beautiful weather, and we haven’t had to use the historic fireplaces the past month.

And to have fun, the photographer, Chris Guibert, decided to start thinking about Halloween when we will begin to use the fireplaces again.

Lodging available this Winter, 2020-2021

Looking for that winter getaway? Ever been to Copper Harbor when the snow is flying with the winter chill in the air? Want to stay near trails and downhill skiing at Mt. Bohemia?

Come and join us at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge this winter for some great outdoor adventures during the day. Then spend a relaxing evening by the fireplace in your warm and cozy cabin. We have cabins this winter ranging in sizes with 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and 3 bedroom cabins available, which have 1-2 living rooms and 1-2 bathrooms (with mini-fridges and coffee-makers, but no microwaves, no kitchens, and no TVs).

Yes, lodging will be open to the general public this winter at the historic Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. The Lodge has only been open for 2 winters in it’s existence prior to this winter (winter 2007 – 2008 and winter 2008 – 2009). This winter the cabins on the golf course-side are available to rent. See property map to see the location and pictures of each cabin. Each log cabin is unique.

We will be providing towels, linens and coffee during your stay. WiFi connectivity is available as well. All of our cabins have either a wood or gas fireplace, with firewood provided.

The cabin rentals are 3 and 4 night minimum rentals, starting either on Wednesdays or Thursdays each week (we aren’t renting the cabins on Sunday-Tuesday nights, as those dates are slated for housekeeping to clean the cabins — keeping with blocking a day before and a day after each reservation for health and safety concerns for the staff and guests). If you would like a week-long rental, call our reservation line at 906-289-4403 ext 1 for more information. Rates are available in our reservation system based upon the selected dates.

Take in the great outdoors here in the Copper country this winter for an experience to remember.

Note: It has not been decided yet if food and beverage operations at the Lodge will be open for the winter. This posting is about the lodging (e.g. the cabins) being available during the winter. [ Update on September 15, 2020: food and beverage will be open during the winter — see the hours of operations ]

FlingGolf at the Lodge; Seeing families and friends play and having fun together

This season, one of the additions we have made to our outdoor activities is FlingGolf — a sport that is easy-to-learn, casual, and up-tempo.

Played on the Lodge’s 9-hole golf course, FlingGolf is a blend of lacrosse and golf using a regular golf ball.  Rather than using a set of golf clubs, players use a single Fling Stick. Throwers “hurl” the ball and shape the shot from tee to hole. Fling players can play in their own group or can play in the same group as traditional golfers. We have seen friends and families do both this season.

FlingGolf is a wonderful way to get families and friends out on the course – right alongside traditional golfers.  This season we have seen families mix FlingGolf with traditional golfers in their family, playing in the same foursome. We are finding that having FlingGolf as an option with traditional golf is a wonderful way to continue to enjoy a family vacation together.

Fling sticks can be rented at the Outdoor Activity Center, and you can book a tee time via the regular method (just like a tee time for a traditional round of golf).

This picture was taken of the Outdoor Services team, discussing the vision of the center going forward. This month we have been working on transitioning the Pro Shop building to the Outdoor Activity Center (OAC), as we focus now on multiple outdoor activities at the Lodge. Golf – Bike – Hike.

Introducing KM Ale

We have launched our own beer: KM Ale.

Produced in collaboration with Barrel + Beam, KM Ale is a farmhouse sour. It has that earthy tone to it; with a wild yeast funk, and hops in the nose.

Barrel + Beam is based in Marquette, by the head brewer. Nick and crew pour their hearts into our passionate pursuit of bottle-conditioned farmhouse ales.

Come up, Experience the Keweenaw, visit the Lodge, and try the KM Ale.

The ale is only available at the Lodge at this time.

Name of Pro Shop building changed to Outdoor Activity Center

This past week we made a name change to the Pro Shop building. The new name is the build is the Outdoor Activity Center (OAC).

The reason for the name change is to better represent what the building will be used for going forward, which is the hub for all the outdoor activities that are taking place at the Lodge.

Golf has been the primary outdoor activity at the Lodge for a number of years. The term “Pro Shop” represented that golf focus.

Now that the Lodge is focusing on multiple outdoor activities, including hiking, trailing running, mountain biking, disc golf, and more, it made sense to rename the building to better represent these activities.

We look forward to incorporating more of our outdoor activities as the summer progresses, and the winter comes along (as we will also be adding winter outdoor activities). The Keweenaw is built for people to be outdoors. The Outdoor Activity Center is being setup to help make that a reality for more people visiting the Keweenaw.

Get outdoors. Ride a bike. Hike a trail. Play a round of golf. Do all the above.

Dine-In starting this coming week

This week we transitioned our take-out operations to the back of the Lodge — to the Little Cabin Cafe area. This will be where we will continue to do take-out this summer, and where we offer our specialty coffee (mochas, lattes, espressos, cappuccinos, and more).

AND now we are moving towards the summer dine-in operations.

We will open for dine-in service on Wednesday, June 10th.

Our dine-in operations will be different than in the past. It is based upon what we are comfortable with in the current environment.

We will have a limited number of seats in the front part of the Lodge — the original part of the Lodge. We are only going to sit ~50 people at a time for dine-in services, which will entail the bar area, the foyer, the dining room, and the dining room porch. This will be for the fore-seeable future, as we focus on providing a healthy, safe, and positive environment where we can create great food and a great culinary experience.

Over the next couple of days, we will post more details on our web site (in the Dining section). These details will highlight how we will be operating the dine-in services at the Lodge for the foreseeable future this summer.

For the hours that our dining services are open, see the Dining Services Hours of Operations.

Golf course open for the 2020 season

It is June 1st, the start of a new month. The golf course at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is now officially open for the 2020 season.

Tee times can be made online 7 days in advance, with the earliest tee time being 8am (make a tee time).

With the opening, we have several changes related to the health concerns and current executive orders that have been issued in the state of Michigan that affect our golf operations. Some of these changes include:

  • We are offering cart rental; however, it is one-person per cart, unless from the same household (see cart rental rates)
  • No touching or taking out the flagstick (using pool noodles to not allow golf balls to go into the cup)
  • Tee times are booked online.
  • We are cashless, and thus green fees and cart rentals are all paid via credit or debit card. We no longer accept cash.
  • Social distancing protocols are in place — staying 6-feet apart from one another
  • When interfacing with golfers, staff will be wearing masks when inside buildings and when it is difficult to stay 6-feet apart
  • No club rentals at this time, so golfers will need to bring their own clubs until further notice

Read the Golf Course Terms and Conditions for the complete list of terms and conditions.

Of note: The food and beverage operations is not operating everyday. Updates to the hours of operations for the food and beverage can be found here.

And yes, it is bug season for the next several weeks at the top of the Keweenaw. So if black flies love you, bring your bug spray.
