Announcing the Mother’s Day Menu and Lodging Special

We only have a few more weeks until our May 9th season opening and our staff is busy with preparations for the coming season. We have been posting our changes to our Instagram and Facebook feeds, so some of you will be familiar with the work we have been doing; the carpet is new, the porches are brighter, and roofs mended. Our followers have also seen information on our May 12th Mother’s Day Buffet, which is our first big event of the year.

With all these new things happening, we think it is even more important now to remember who we are. While designing our Mother’s Day Brunch menu, we kept our history and traditions in mind while looking forward to an exciting future. Our menu this year features Upper Peninsula classics we all know and love, and these comfort foods will be accented by exciting new ingredients and cooking techniques. Our guests can look forward to:

Come join us at the Lodge for brunch on Mother’s Day, May 12th!

The sun is shining, the temperatures are rising, and the snow is melting (sort of), which means the Lodge reopening date of May 9th is fast approaching. As we are redecorating and freshening up after the Lodge’s 85th Keweenaw winter, we are excited to be finalizing the events we have coming up early in the summer season.

For many years, the Mother’s Day brunch at the Lodge was an exciting event that paid homage to the spectacular women who raised us. This year, with the changes we are working on at the Lodge, we want to bring this event back to honor motherhood and further our efforts in marrying the history with the future of the Lodge.

On May 12th, we will be offering two sittings, by reservation only (no walk-ins), between the hours of 10 – 11:30, then between 12 – 1:30.

While our regular menu will not be offered on the 12th, our Mother’s Day buffet will offer a variety of breakfast and lunch items, sides, and beverages. As we develop the menu, here is a sampling of the food items we are thinking about:

  • Carved Prime Rib
  • Glazed Ham
  • Scalloped Potatoes
  • Smoked fish spread and crackers
  • Cold and hot vegetable dishes
  • Selection of fresh bread
  • Pannukakku
  • Bacon and sausage
  • Crustless Quiche
  • Fresh fruits and compotes
  • Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s
  • Coffee, tea, milk, orange juice, and pop

**Any specialty beverages, beer, or wine will be charged as priced on our regular drinks menu.**

Again, due to anticipated popularity, and our desire to provide excellent service to our guests, this brunch event is by reservation only. We will be unable to accommodate walk-ins. After 2pm, the public is welcome to visit the Lodge without reservations, and have drinks and snacks with friends and family.

To make your reservation for the May 12th Mother’s Day brunch, call or email us at 906-289-4403 or reservations@keweenawresort.com. We can’t wait to see you up at the Lodge!

2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest Winners

In March 2019, the Lodge requested photos from our Facebook and Instagram followers to help with decorating the cabins and hotel with photos of the Keweenaw; this was part of our 2019  photo contest . We were not sure what to expect, but the posts on our social media proved to be more popular than we could have imagined.

We received 240 submissions, which we narrowed down to photos that satisfied the criteria set forth in the contest rules, leaving us with 189 submissions. Our staff took the time to review each of the photos and vote for our favorites. Once we were left with 45 images, our resident art connoisseurs made final selections of the images that we thought best showcased the beauty and history of the Keweenaw Peninsula.  It was a tough process to have to say no to many of the interesting and wonderful photos.

That said, here are our 2019 winners! A few of these photographers have more than one photo that was selected. If you see your name below, we have already emailed you; so please check there for more information. We want to offer a huge thanks to all of you who submitted!

  • Gary Ennis: Lake Manganese; Brockway Mountain
  • Charles Eshbach: Delaware Mine
  • Brita Haapala: Brunette Park rocks; Portage Lift Bridge and The Queen
  • Neil Harri: Breakfast Lake
  • Jim Hay: Great Blue Heron at Gratiot Lake; Copper Harbor Light House
  • Debbie Jarve: Winter Wonderland at Swedetown
  • Pam Karttunen: Belle Isle, Isle Royale
  • Chris LaFernier: Skanee
  • Jason Makela: Sunset at True North (March 2019)
  • Nathan Miller: Central Mine
  • Frank Mittelstadt: Garden Brook and Keweenaw Mountain Lodge seen from Brockway Mountain
  • Candy Pham: Eagle Harbor Lighthouse
  • Henry Roeters: Milky Way Galaxy at Montreal Falls (July 2018); Northern Lights at Great Sand Bay (May 2018)
  • Mark Upton: Waves on Lake Superior; Northern Lights over Lake Superior
  • Nicholas Wilson: Eagle at Gratiot Lake
  • Craig Woerpel: Just north of Eagle Harbor

If you have any questions about the process we followed in selecting the photos, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@keweenawresort.com.

Note: We didn’t include the photos in this announcement, as we want to make sure the photographers agree to showing their photos online (i.e. ensure we are following copyright).

2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest Concluded; Reviewing Photos

We would like to thank all the individuals that submitted photos for the 2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest – for the KML Cabins.

There were a total of 240 photos submitted from more than 75 individuals.  Of the 240 photos, 189 of the photos matched the criteria that was requested (in the Keweenaw) and were only 3 photos per individual.  This is a great showing.  It is s wonderful to see this enthusiasm from the community, and we look forward to reviewing the photos that were submitted.

For the next step, the KML staff will review the submissions, with the goal of selecting 21 photos to be printed on woodprints.  These woodprints will be hung in the KML cabins.

For those photos that are selected, we will send an email to let the owner know the next step, which will include providing a high resolution copy of your photo.  Winners will be notified by the end of the month, with a high resolution photo to be provided shortly there after.

2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest – for KML Cabins

[ Deadline March 25, 2019 ]

We are looking for 21 photos which we can print on wood, and hang in the cabins at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.

Rather than calling upon our own archives, we thought we would put a call out to the talented pool of photographers that take photos of the lovely and rugged Keweenaw.

The photos submitted will be included in a pool and reviewed by the staff at the Lodge to determine which 21 photos will match well in the cabins. We have 42 spots to hang photos in the cabins and hotel at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.  Thus, each photo will be printed twice, and hung in two different cabins and/or hotel rooms.

Below is are examples of how photos look on woodprints:

If you are interested in submitting a photo, complete the form below and provide a low-resolution copy of your photo. If your photo is selected, we will request a high-resolution version of the photo at that time (to be provided by March 31, 2019).

If you are wanting to submit more than one photo, submit the form multiple times. You can submit up to 3 different photos.  If for some reason you lose count of how many photos you have submitted, we will take the last 3 photos you have submitted.

The deadline for submissions is March 25, 2019.

If your photo(s) is selected, we will print the photo(s) and hang it in the cabins.  You will retain the rights to the photo, and the Lodge doesn’t have the right to resale or use the photo for other than the purpose of having the photo hung in the cabins at the Lodge.

Photo credit will be shown on each print, providing the Lodge guests information who took the photo.

In addition, if at least on of your photos is selected, we would like to offer you a one-night stay in the cabin where your photo is being hung, and highlighted for guests.

Submission Form

[ The deadline has passed for submitting photos, and thus the submission form has been turned off. Thank you to all the individuals that submitted their photos. ]

For the photo to be considered, it must have been taken in the Keweenaw, as we are looking to highlight the Keweenaw for guests that are staying at the Lodge.

You can submit a total of 3 photos. If you forget how many photos you submitted, and for some reason you submit more than 3 photos, then we will take the last 3 photos you submitted.

Can I submit a painting?

No. For this submission, we are looking for only photos.

Who will be deciding which photos will be selected?

The staff at the Lodge will be making the decisions on which photos to include in the 21 photos that will be printed and hung in the cabins.

We will start to review the photos after March 25, 2019, and will send out an announcements to those that submitted photos by March  28, 2019.

No, we will not be paying a photography fee — so no cash reward.  We understand that this might be a turn off for some photographers.  If that is the case, we understand if you would rather not submit your photos in that case.

….so what benefit do you get in having your photo selected to be printed and hung in the cabins at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge?

If your photo is selected, we will print your photo on a woodprint. We will print 2 copies as it will be hung in 2 different cabins at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. The prints will have your name on them (e.g. Photo Credit: <your name>).  This will give you exposure to guests that stay in the cabins which your photos are hanging.  In addition, we will provide a 1-night stay for free in the cabin in which your photo is hanging….so you can see how your photo looks in the cabin.

“Back 9” Trails at the Lodge [ Update ]

Over the past 2 months we have been working with the Copper Harbor Trails Club on the “Back 9” trails on the Lodge property for mountain biking activities. We were able to walk the “Back 9” portion of the property on October 10th after the 1 Million Cups event. This group included Ben Ciavola, Nathan Miller, Sam Raymond, Harvey Desnick, and John Mueller. The walk gave the group a base idea of what the cross-country ski trail corridors looked like after not being used much over the past 5-10 years.

Before the snow hit the ground, Nathan and Sam were able to spend more time in October and November on the property confirming that the cross-country ski trails would work well for mountain biking trails, with just minor modifications. Aaron Rogers was also able to confirm the modifications from his trail-building perspective.

In the image attached with this post, you can see the minor modifications that we are looking at doing in the early 2019 season (after the snow melts and the ground is not too muddy) to enable the trails to be classified as “green” / beginner trails.

We then went about developing names for the 3 trails that were identified. We worked with staff at the Lodge and staff at the CHTC group to get generate and short list of names. We posted the short list for each of the trails in a poll (submitted on Facebook) to get feedback from mountain bikers.

https://www.facebook.com/CopperHarborTrailsClub/posts/10156202495298533?__tn__=-UC-R

Here are the names that were decided upon (the poll received 260 responses over a 1 week period).

Back 9 Trails at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge:

+ Orange loop: Chipmunk Run
+ Pink loop: Moose on the Loose
+ Green loop: Little Loon

Initially we will do basic grooming to have the trails rideable this summer season. Come out and volunteer in May and June to help the CHTC and the KML staff with this.

We look forward to see the activity on the trails this summer.

In the meantime, with snow on the ground, the team is now working on the signage for the trails during the off-season, and look to have these trails available for visitors in the summer of 2019.

Of note: These trails will also be used for cross-country skiing, which was their initial use when the Lodge opened for 2 winter seasons 10 or so years ago.
