These workshops will start out with a brief powerpoint presentation (at the Outdoor Activity Center)\, and then we will go outside for hands-on experience — taking pictures of the night time sky around the Lodge property (weather depending). With the information garnered from the workshop\, it will make stargazing more enjoyable. \n \nPrice\nFree for Lodge guests\, $75 for non-Lodge guests \nYou meet at the Outdoor Activities Center at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge at 9:30pm\, and the session will last about 2 hours. My name is Pam\, and I have been a photographer for the past 6 years and counting. I graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2017\, with an associates degree in Art and Design\, Photography. I also graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2019\, with a diploma in Business for Photography. During that time\, I’ve learned the secrets of night sky photography\, including capturing the illusive Northern Lights\, won a few photo contests\, had a few photos featured at Northern Michigan University\, Crooked Tree Arts Center\, the DeVos Museum\, and the local Daily Mining Gazette calendar. I’ve also photographed weddings\, landscapes\, family portraits\, high school senior portraits\, newborn portraits\, nature/wildlife. I love capturing special moments with my camera. I also am very happy to be a part of the team\, here at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge!

DESCRIPTION:The Perseids are a popular meteor shower\, as they peak on warm August nights as seen from the northern hemisphere. \nThis year\, the Perseids start to be active on July 17 and will continue through August 24. Their peak will be August 11th and 12th. \nFrom the top of the Keweenaw at the Lodge\, where the skies are dark\, the rates will be 50-75 shower members per hour at a maximum. \nThese meteor showers are called Perseids since the area of the sky where the meteors originate is located near the Perseus constellation.

He is a culinary graduate of Schoolcraft College and has taken additional classes at the Culinary Institute of America. He is a two-time semi-finalist in the prestigious Bocuse d’Or International Culinary Competition. Chef Gary has won numerous awards in his field\, including many for his ice sculptures. \nHis experiences include being Executive Chef at several clubs and hotels and the University of Michigan. Currently\, Chef Gary is teaching culinary classes at Washtenaw Community College\, where he was nominated for Chef Instructor of the year. He is also an American Culinary Federation (ACF) culinary evaluator. \nChef Gary has an interest in innovative modern takes on classic dishes and charcuterie\, always looking for creative ways to update his menus. DESCRIPTION:The Draconids is a minor meteor shower. It will produce around 10 meteors per hour. \nWhile this meteor shower is not a large meteor shower\, it is a meteor shower that would be good for families with small children as it can be viewed in the early evening (as opposed to the early morning hours). \nMonitor the skies between October 6 and October 10\, with the peak display predicted to be on October 7 — because of the new moon on October 7th.

DESCRIPTION:[ Read: Oct 8-10\, 2021: Fall Colors Photo Workshop Recap ]\nJoin professional photographers Nathan Bett and Chris Guibert and naturalist/photographer Tom Oliver for a weekend of photo exploration around the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. This is a two day/two night workshop. At night\, we will discuss techniques for capturing fall colors and review elements of photo composition. During the daytime\, we will travel to some of the most scenic locations for fall colors on the Keweenaw Peninsula.  \n \nItinerary \nActivity Level: Moderate. Most locations will be accessible by short hikes. However\, a couple locations involve hikes of up to 3 miles\, round trip. \nFriday\, October 8th \n\n7:00 pm — Introductions at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and classroom session on photo composition and autumn color photography techniques. Although originally from Marquette\, Michigan\, Nathan recently relocated to Hancock from New York City\, where he taught at the City University Of New York\, and represented a major camera manufacturer as a technical specialist in photography. He now spends his time indulging in the over abundance of natural beauty in his native UP and spending excesses of time outdoors with his family. Nathan maintains a passion for photography and the outdoors that he delights in sharing with students. He received a degree in Professional Photography from Colorado Mountain College in 2002. After school he worked as the production manager at Digital Arts Aspen and then started a freelance photography business in Sandpoint\, Idaho. As a commercial photographer he took various jobs for restaurants\, wineries\, breweries\, architects\, ski areas\, travel bureaus and both local and national publications. His work has won multiple awards. In the Keweenaw his work focuses on outdoor lifestyle imagery. His work can be seen at chrisguibert.com and chrisguibert_photography on Instragram.   \n \nThomas Oliver is a wildlife biologist\, science educator\, and photographer who has been fascinated by nature\, wildlife\, and the outdoors his entire life. Tom’s primary areas of focus with his photography are in the genre’s of conservation\, outdoor\, and travel photography. An Upper Peninsula native\, Tom began taking pictures during his career as a wildlife biologist\, as a way to learn more about the animals with which he was working. When his career shifted to science education\, and granted him the opportunity to travel internationally\, Tom found that he could apply his skills in photography and ecology during his travels to tell stories about conservation. The biography on his website states “I don’t try to only get simple portraits of individual animals but also dynamic scenes that tell a story –  how species (including humans) interact among themselves\, with other species\, and with the environment. I want to provide an honest depiction of life – with the struggles\, the successes\, the lives and (sometimes) the deaths. To tell the real life stories of individuals while never losing sight of the fact that they are (and we are) part of something much\, much bigger.” His work has been featured in two solo exhibits\, outdoorphotographer.com’s “Photo of the Day” and Lake Superior Magazine’s 23rd Annual Photo Contest. SUMMARY:Stargazing: Taurids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Taurids is a meteor shower that produces 5-10 meteors per hour. \nThis meteor shower is unique to view because it is made up of two separate streams rather than one. The first stream is produced by dust grains (left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10). The second stream consists of debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. \nIt will be another good meteor shower to via in the early evening as it is happening on a new moon.
