SUMMARY:Stargazing: Draconids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Draconids is a minor meteor shower. It will produce around 10 meteors per hour. \nWhile this meteor shower is not a large meteor shower\, it is a meteor shower that would be good for families with small children as it can be viewed in the early evening (as opposed to the early morning hours). \nMonitor the skies between October 6 and October 10\, with the peak display predicted to be on October 7 — because of the new moon on October 7th.

SUMMARY:Stargazing: Perseids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Perseids are a popular meteor shower\, as they peak on warm August nights as seen from the northern hemisphere. \nThis year\, the Perseids start to be active on July 17 and will continue through August 24. Their peak will be August 11th and 12th. \nFrom the top of the Keweenaw at the Lodge\, where the skies are dark\, the rates will be 50-75 shower members per hour at a maximum. \nThese meteor showers are called Perseids since the area of the sky where the meteors originate is located near the Perseus constellation.

SUMMARY:Stargazing: Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The peak time to view the Eta Aquarids is estimated to be May 5th this year. May 4th and 6th could also be good days for viewing. They are best viewed pre-dawn (i.e. early in the morning\, before the sunrises). \nEach year the Eta Aquarids peak during early-May each year\, and are known  for their speed: traveling at about 148\,000 mph into Earth’s atmosphere (source: NASA). \nThe moon will still be bright on May 4th\, 5th\, and 6th\, but it will be waning crescent moon. It will be rising near the time of dawn\, but shouldn’t intrude too greatly.  The brighter moonlight may hinder the viewing of the Eta Aquarid meteors somewhat. (Source: Earthsky.org) \nHere is the sunrise\, sunset\, and moonset calendar for Copper Harbor for the month of May 2021: \n\nSunrise-Sunset Calendar\, Copper Harbor\, May 2021\n\nWhen looking for meteor showers\, give yourself at least an hour of viewing time. Meteors tend to come in spurts. \nWhen viewing the depths of the dark skies\, give yourself at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark.

SUMMARY:Stargazing: Lyrids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:Lyrids Meteor Showers occur in late April each year. This year\, the peak viewing period is overnight on April 21-22.  \nThe moon is currently waxing (growing) during this time\, with it expected to be around 68% illuminated. The brightness of the moon might make difficult to view the meteor showers\, thus getting up early before dawn\, when the moon has set\, might offer the best viewing opportunity. \nYou do not need any special kind of equipment to view the meteors. You look up in a clear dark sky. Give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness when you want to see the depths of the stars above you. As with any stargazing activity\, it requires patience. It is expected that you can see between 15-20 meteors streaking across the dark skies per hours (depending on how clear the sky is). The Lyrids are known to be fast and bright meteors\, and originate from the constellation Lyra the Harp (Source: NASA). \nThe Lryids happen around this time each year\, and is one of the oldest recorded meteor showers. The first observation goes back to 687 B.C. (Source:Bill Cooke\, space.com). \nIf you take a clear night sky photo of Lyrids meteor shower\, and you would like to share for a possible story on space.com or to possibly be included in the space.com image gallery\, you can send the photo\, comments and your name and observing location to spacephotos@space.com. Make sure to include your name and where you took the photo. Visit space.com for more info\, or follow them on Twitter and/or Facebook. \nBonus: April 22nd is Earth Day
