DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop\nThe purpose of this workshop is to educate people on how to capture the beauty of the the night sky on camera. Topics being covered include equipment needed\, camera settings\, and the best locations for viewing. These workshops will start out with a brief presentation (in the conference room)\, and then we will go outside for hands-on experience — taking pictures of the night time sky (hopefully the milky way or the northern lights) around the Lodge property (weather depending). With the information garnered from the workshop\, it will make stargazing more enjoyable. \n\nPrice\nFree for Lodge guests\, $75 for non-Lodge guests. \nReservations are required. Space is limited\, so you will want to register early to reserve your spot. To reserve your spot\, please call (906-289-4403 ext 2) or email events@keweenawresort.com. \nLocation\nYou meet at the Conference Center at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge between 7:00pm and 7:30pm. The session will last about 2 hours  – possibly more if participants would like to spend more time with guided practice. \nAbout the Instructor: Nate Bett\nNathan Bett is a photographer and educator in Hancock Michigan. Although originally from Marquette\, Michigan\, Nathan recently relocated to Hancock from New York City\, where he taught at the City University Of New York\, and represented a major camera manufacturer as a technical specialist in photography. He now spends his time indulging in the over abundance of natural beauty in his native UP and spending excesses of time outdoors with his family. DESCRIPTION:[ Read: 2022 Dawg Daze Recap ] \nWhat is Dawg Daze? Dawg Daze is a fun event that celebrates the winter\, trails and dogs. There will be four events: a time trial skijoring race called the “Perimeter Dog Derby” that circumnavigates the Perimeter Loop\, a dog and human costume contest\, a best trick contest and an award for the furriest dog. \n \nWhen: March 5\, 2022      \nLoop Race 11am – 1pm      \nCostume Contest: 1:30pm – 2:00pm  \nBest Trick and Furriest Dog contests: 1:30pm – 2:00 pm:  \nAwards Ceremonies 2:00pm \nWhere: The event will be held outside on the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge grounds. \nDetails: \n“Perimeter Dog Derby” Is a time trial style event. Dogs must be leashed or tethered at all times. Teams consist of one person and one dog. Teams start at the starting line and must complete one loop around the Perimeter Trail. Fastest time wins.  \n“Costume Contest” Is a costume contest for dogs. Costumes will be judged on a scale from 1 to 10 on  “originality”  “cuteness” “human costume.” Bonus points for matching dog and owner costumes.   \nNew for 2022 will be a “Best Trick” contest and a “Furriest Dog” award! \nRegistration for both events is done in person\, the day of the event. \nKML Dog Treats will be available for purchase and random dog treat tastings will happen throughout the day. \nLodging guests will have their pet fee waived for their entire stay\, if their stay includes Saturday\, March 5\, 2022. Pets must still be registered with guest services. \nAll events are free to enter. A donation box for pet related items (used linens\, blankets\, sheet\, pillowcases\, towels\, dog/cat treats and toys.) and a donation jar for monetary donations will be set up for the Copper Country Humane Society. https://www.cchumanesociety.com/ \nOverall Rules:  \n\nDogs must be leashed at all times while on the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.\nNo aggressive dogs.\nDog waste must be picked up immediately except during race.\n\n\nPerimeter Dog Derby Race Rules:  \n\nOnly 1 dog and 1 person per team.\nDog must be leashed or tethered at all times.\nA specific team only gets one chance around the course. \nYou can start anytime between 11am and 1pm. Because snowshoe hares are abundant throughout the Keweenaw\, we are providing a brief educational program about their ecology. \nSnowshoe Education: Iverson Snowshoes will be present with demonstration models of their UP-made\, traditional snowshoes. For the novice snowshoers – learn what snowshoes are\, the different types of snowshoes\, snowshoe history\, how to put them on\, and how to use them. For more advanced snowshoers\, try out and compare traditional and modern snowshoes. \nSpeak with members of Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) about opportunities for outdoor recreation\, including snowshoeing\, throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. \nSnowshoe Activities: \n\n\n\nAccess to over 10 km of groomed and packed trails for snowshoeing\,\nA 1.4 mile trail run and shorter kids (under 10) race.\nWinter Wellness with Mindful Snowshoeing with Dayna Browning\nA guided moonlit snowshoe hike on the lodge’s trail system (at 7:00pm).\n\n\n\nSchedule:  \n9:00am – Race registration begins (in the Outdoor Activity Center) \n10:00am – Adult Snowshoe Loop Race \n11:30am – Kids Snowshoe Race \n1:00pm – Meditative/Mindful Snowshoeing \n3:00pm – Awards Ceremonies \n3:30pm – Snowshoe Hare Ecology (in the Conference Center) \n7:00pm – Guided Moonlit Snowshoe Hike: (reservations required) \nSnowshoe Hare Snowshoe Race Details: \nThe purpose of the Snowshoe Hare Snowshoe Race is to provides a chance for people to experience the winter trails at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in a fun and competitive fashion. For some\, this can also be the chance to try winter trail running. \nRegistration: Race registration begins at 9:00am in the Outdoor Activity Center. Participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver and will be issued a race number. \nRace Rules:  \n\n\n\nThe race will be a mass start for all adults.\nThe course must be covered with both snowshoes on and the competitor must cross the finish line with both snowshoes firmly attached to his/her feet.\nShould the competitor lose a snowshoe during the race\, he/she must step off the track and re-attach the snowshoe in order to finish the race.\nCompetitors must follow the race course. Going off-course or using different trails for the purpose of short-cutting the race will be grounds for disqualification.\n\n\n\nThe kid’s race will be a short race (50 yards\, or so) set up near the beginning of the adult race course and will only use a portion of the trail that is wide and groomed flat. \nPrizes: Prizes will be gift certificates good towards the Lodge Life Shop and Lodging. \nRace Course: The race course is 1.4 miles in length and will encompass a set of trails that will vary between wide\, groomed trails to narrow\, single-track\, packed trails. The trails will traverse open areas and forest. Spectators who venture out along the course must wear snowshoes or cross country skis. All participants and spectators must stay off all of the golf course’s greens and tee boxes. \n \nFood and Beverages: For cuisine which is rustic\, worldly\, and centered around the theme of snowshoes \n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, Rabbit Sausage Soup will be available at the Little Cabin Café\nDuring the evening\, in the Dining Room (reservations required)\, Hasenpfeffer — a traditional German stew made from marinated rabbit or hare — will be available as a special\, limited\, dinner option.\n\n\n\nWe will also be offering Blackrocks’ Grand Rabbits beer\, as part of the overall theme. \n\nThis event is free to resort guests and the general public to attend. \nIf people want to support the event\, the Lodge\, and the Keweenaw\, we are asking participants to either join or donate to the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) – an organization dedicated to protecting the Keweenaw’s vast landscapes for everyone\, forever. KORC will be onsite answering questions and registering new members.

SUMMARY:Winter Moonlight Snowshoe Hikes
DESCRIPTION:[ Read: January 15\, 2022: Moonlit Snowshoe Hike Recap ] \nJoin us for a guided night time interpretive snowshoe hike. Please join our Outdoor Activities Center (OAC)  staff members on an interpretive snowshoe hike around the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge property. This is a free activity for lodging guests and the general public\, reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling the OAC at (906) 289-4403\, ext 4. \n \n  \nIf you do not own snowshoes\, rentals are available. \nParticipants will meet in the Winter OAC which is located in the back of the Lodge. \nWe recommend arriving 30 to 45 minutes before to check gear\, sign the waiver and meet the staff and other participants. The Dining Room is open on these evenings from 4:30 to 9:00 pm. If you are interested in dining at the Lodge and participating in the hike we recommend a 4:30 or 5:00 pm dining reservation.  \nThese dates were selected close to the full moon in hopes of a clear night. The snowshoe hikes will go off regardless of the weather so be prepared for changing conditions. \nRecommended Items to bring: warm\, layered clothing\, night lights\, snow shoes\, poles\, goggles and an adventurous attitude.

DESCRIPTION:The Geminids Meteor Shower has a large number of meteors per hour\, with up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak. \nThis meteor shower is a result of debris left behind by the 3200 Phaethon asteroid. \nNote: There might be a distraction with the moon and it’s light during these nights.

SUMMARY:Stargazing: Taurids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Taurids is a meteor shower that produces 5-10 meteors per hour. \nThis meteor shower is unique to view because it is made up of two separate streams rather than one. The first stream is produced by dust grains (left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10). The second stream consists of debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. \nIt will be another good meteor shower to via in the early evening as it is happening on a new moon.
