Golf Leagues started this week

This past Tuesday (June 11th) and Wednesday (June 12th), the Women’s and the Men’s Golf League at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge kicked off the 2019 summer season on the golf course.

The two days entailed a practice round for each league, and enabled us to find out who will be playing in the leagues, and to be able to work on the schedule for the matches over the next 9-10 weeks.

If you signed up this past week during league practice round, you will be on the list. If you still want to play in the league, you can sign up by sending an email to golf@keweenawresort.com, calling the Lodge at 906-289-4403, or stopping by and signing up.  You will need to do so before next Tuesday accordingly.

Can’t wait to see you up here!

Golf Cart Parking around the Lodge

Some of you have noticed that we have put up a yellow fence next to the putting green.

To help the grass grow, we ask that if you are to using the restroom or walking into the Lodge, you keep the golf carts in the dirt area close to the cart path. By keeping off the grass, you are helping make the golf course and the overall facilities at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge a much more inviting place for everyone to enjoy.

Future Plans: We have plans to make the dirt area a place where people can hang out and sit outside (e.g. a Beer Garden). However, before we do that, we need to have the grass grow where it is currently growing, and to work on the drainage.  That way we can put landscaping in the location where the dirt is currently located.  This will entail putting in gutters and down spouts on the Lodge so the water coming off the Lodge roof is redirected away from Ocha Potter’s Pond (which appears where the dirt is currently located after a heavy rain).

Golf leagues starting next week

The days of summer are starting to begin at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. The sun is coming up early in the morning and staying out late in the evening, the grass is growing on the golf course, and greens are getting mowed (new greens mower). As such, the 2019 summer season golf leagues weekly play will be begin next week.

The Women’s Golf League will start this Tuesday (June 11th), and the Men’s Golf League will begin this Wednesday (June 12th).

Information about the leagues can be found on the web site: https://keweenawmountainlodge.com/golf/golf-leagues/

To register, call the Lodge at 906-289-4403 or send us an email at golf@keweenawresort.com. Organizer: John Mueller.

Golf: Why the difference in the green fees for Keweenaw County Residents?

It has come to our attention that non-Keweenaw county residents have asked why the Lodge makes a distinction between golfers that are from Keweenaw County and golfers that are not Keweenaw County as it relates to our green fees.

First, to point out the difference which individuals are questioning: Keweenaw County residents pay $3 and $5 less than non-Keweenaw County residents to play 9 or 18 holes of golf at the Lodge respectively. [ see current green fees ]

Our reasoning for charging Keweenaw County residents $3 (9-holes) and $5 (18-holes) less is that all Keweenaw County residents prior to the change in ownership in 2018 had supported the Lodge operations through their taxes, including the golf course. So we felt it was best to provide those residents with a small benefit when playing the KML golf course.

It is sad that individuals are concerned about this difference, as the green fees are still lower than what it costs to operate the golf course currently.

Average green fees for privately-owned golf courses is $40 for 18 holes on weekends. Our highest green fee for 18-holes currently is $30. If we keep at this rate, then the KML golf course has a higher probability of not surviving — the majority of the golf courses that closed in 2016 charged below $40 per 18 holes.

To better understand this situation, it costs the Lodge more than $500 in labor per day to keep the golf course in its current shape. This means to cover only the golf course maintenance costs, the Lodge needs to have at least 28 nine-hole rounds of golf (assuming the average green fee for 9-holes is $18). And this calculation does not include any other labor costs related to golf, nor material costs, nor equipment costs (e.g. fuel for the greens mower, purchasing a new greens mower, maintaining the greens mower, etc.).

To help individuals better understand how much goes into running a golf course, going forward we want to provide additional information and be transparent in our operational decisions so golfers have a better understanding of the decisions we are making for the golf course at the Lodge.

Note: the staff at the Lodge is looking to grow the entire Keweenaw, and the owner has investment in Houghton county. So this decision is not to create a difference between Houghton and Keweenaw counties. Rather, and to reiterate the point above, the decision is to provide a small benefit to those that kept the golf course going over the years.

2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest Concluded; Reviewing Photos

We would like to thank all the individuals that submitted photos for the 2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest – for the KML Cabins.

There were a total of 240 photos submitted from more than 75 individuals.  Of the 240 photos, 189 of the photos matched the criteria that was requested (in the Keweenaw) and were only 3 photos per individual.  This is a great showing.  It is s wonderful to see this enthusiasm from the community, and we look forward to reviewing the photos that were submitted.

For the next step, the KML staff will review the submissions, with the goal of selecting 21 photos to be printed on woodprints.  These woodprints will be hung in the KML cabins.

For those photos that are selected, we will send an email to let the owner know the next step, which will include providing a high resolution copy of your photo.  Winners will be notified by the end of the month, with a high resolution photo to be provided shortly there after.

2019 Keweenaw Photo Contest – for KML Cabins

[ Deadline March 25, 2019 ]

We are looking for 21 photos which we can print on wood, and hang in the cabins at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.

Rather than calling upon our own archives, we thought we would put a call out to the talented pool of photographers that take photos of the lovely and rugged Keweenaw.

The photos submitted will be included in a pool and reviewed by the staff at the Lodge to determine which 21 photos will match well in the cabins. We have 42 spots to hang photos in the cabins and hotel at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.  Thus, each photo will be printed twice, and hung in two different cabins and/or hotel rooms.

Below is are examples of how photos look on woodprints:

If you are interested in submitting a photo, complete the form below and provide a low-resolution copy of your photo. If your photo is selected, we will request a high-resolution version of the photo at that time (to be provided by March 31, 2019).

If you are wanting to submit more than one photo, submit the form multiple times. You can submit up to 3 different photos.  If for some reason you lose count of how many photos you have submitted, we will take the last 3 photos you have submitted.

The deadline for submissions is March 25, 2019.

If your photo(s) is selected, we will print the photo(s) and hang it in the cabins.  You will retain the rights to the photo, and the Lodge doesn’t have the right to resale or use the photo for other than the purpose of having the photo hung in the cabins at the Lodge.

Photo credit will be shown on each print, providing the Lodge guests information who took the photo.

In addition, if at least on of your photos is selected, we would like to offer you a one-night stay in the cabin where your photo is being hung, and highlighted for guests.

Submission Form

[ The deadline has passed for submitting photos, and thus the submission form has been turned off. Thank you to all the individuals that submitted their photos. ]

“Back 9” Trails at the Lodge [ Update ]

Over the past 2 months we have been working with the Copper Harbor Trails Club on the “Back 9” trails on the Lodge property for mountain biking activities. We were able to walk the “Back 9” portion of the property on October 10th after the 1 Million Cups event. This group included Ben Ciavola, Nathan Miller, Sam Raymond, Harvey Desnick, and John Mueller. The walk gave the group a base idea of what the cross-country ski trail corridors looked like after not being used much over the past 5-10 years.

Before the snow hit the ground, Nathan and Sam were able to spend more time in October and November on the property confirming that the cross-country ski trails would work well for mountain biking trails, with just minor modifications. Aaron Rogers was also able to confirm the modifications from his trail-building perspective.

In the image attached with this post, you can see the minor modifications that we are looking at doing in the early 2019 season (after the snow melts and the ground is not too muddy) to enable the trails to be classified as “green” / beginner trails.

We then went about developing names for the 3 trails that were identified. We worked with staff at the Lodge and staff at the CHTC group to get generate and short list of names. We posted the short list for each of the trails in a poll (submitted on Facebook) to get feedback from mountain bikers.

https://www.facebook.com/CopperHarborTrailsClub/posts/10156202495298533?__tn__=-UC-R

Here are the names that were decided upon (the poll received 260 responses over a 1 week period).

Back 9 Trails at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge:

+ Orange loop: Chipmunk Run
+ Pink loop: Moose on the Loose
+ Green loop: Little Loon

Initially we will do basic grooming to have the trails rideable this summer season. Come out and volunteer in May and June to help the CHTC and the KML staff with this.

We look forward to see the activity on the trails this summer.

In the meantime, with snow on the ground, the team is now working on the signage for the trails during the off-season, and look to have these trails available for visitors in the summer of 2019.

Of note: These trails will also be used for cross-country skiing, which was their initial use when the Lodge opened for 2 winter seasons 10 or so years ago.
