Morning Miles
Start your day off with a quiet hike in the fresh Keweenaw morning air. Morning Miles are guided, hikes that meet every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10am, hikes leave by 10:15am, at the Outdoor Activities Center (OAC). These social hikes are a great way to familiarize yourself with the property and surrounding area and meet new people. We will also be on the lookout for birds and wildlife. Our guides will take you through our meandering Back 9 trails under a canopy of green, through Dancing Bear with its rocky outcrops, or we will Say Hello to the views of Lake Superior and Hunter’s Point from Here We Go.
Morning Miles hikes take 1.5 to 2 hours, and are usually 2 to 4 miles. Routes vary based on the groups experience. Please wear sturdy shoes and carry water, and be prepared to combat whatever bug (blackfly, mosquito etc) has taken over the forest. No sign up or cost, see Events Calendar for specific Morning Miles dates. Also, feel free to take these hikes on your own, or contact outdoor-activities@keweenawresort.com to schedule a specific day and time to have a guided hike.
Tuesdays With Tom – Morning Miles with KML Naturalist Tom Oliver
Join Tom for an interpretive hike Tuesday Mornings at 10am. These hikes are open to people of all ages. Hikers should expect variable terrain that requires a moderate fitness level. Routes vary, but participants can expect to do anywhere between 2-4 miles. Discussions include plant and animal identifications, local geology, weather, and the use of nature apps. While these are social/educational hikes, quiet hikers tend to be more likely to experience interesting encounters; so, the nature hikes are a good opportunity to practice mindful quiet moments to listen for birds and animals.
The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge’s Naturalist, Tom Oliver, is also the Lodge’s Education and Events Specialist. Having grown up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he is very familiar with the local fauna and flora and worked as a wildlife biologist for fifteen years in varying capacities across the country and with the Michigan DNR. Tom also taught high school science classes including biology, environmental science, and chemistry in Germany and South Korea for thirteen years. His combination of experiences provides participants of all ages and backgrounds a fun and rewarding experience connecting with the natural landscape of the Keweenaw.
Please be sure to bring water, snacks, and to wear clothing appropriate for the weather on the day of your hike. Other helpful items you might find helpful, include insect repellent and binoculars.
