I purchased my first mountain bike in 1988 while studying at the University of Arizona and like a kid in a candy store, mountain biking became the focus of my life.I worked in bike shops and then started a guide service, Arizona Off-Road Adventures, that offered day and week-long tours around the state of Arizona. The pinnacle of my guiding career was to lead a seventy five day tour down the Continental Divide Mountain Biking Route in 1998. In 2002 I received a degree in Professional Photography from Colorado Mountain College. Since then I have worked as a freelance photographer across the country. My work can be viewed at chrisguibert.com.

My name is Martin Mueller. I study mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University (Go Huskies!) for my bachelor degree. I am a member of the Huskies Pep Band (play alto saxophone as one of the many instruments), the Book Club (American Gods is one of my favorite books), and the Alley Workshop (a workspace for students to create). I enjoy running races, cross stitching, playing and listening to music (seven instruments I can play), and reading mystery stories. During my time working at the lodge, I clean dishes, expedite, make coffee (barista), do house keeping (recent), and maintain the golf course (recent).
Hi! My name is Widad. I am a chef, artisan, and watercolor artist. My interests are reflected in the food, gelato, and paintings that I create. I love to pairing flavors of food that are vibrant, yet provide a balanced feel in one’s mouth. I spend time in the Keweenaw, Kalamazoo, and Austin. I am married to John; we have two children, Martin and Naya.
Since I was a child, nature, wildlife, and the outdoors have always been my deepest fascination - the intrinsic force which drives me. Those interests led me through, both, my career (in wildlife ecology/management and science education) and my preferred forms of recreation (hiking, backpacking, canoeing and kayaking, photography, hunting and fishing, and birding). Although, I was born and raised in the UP, these pursuits also provided me the opportunity to live overseas (in Europe and Asia) for 15 years, which greatly expanded my experience with the outdoors and outdoor recreation in different cultures. So, if you’re interested in anything related to the outdoors, stop by the Outdoor Activities Center (or catch me anywhere you may see me on the grounds) to chat about or get set up for your next outdoor adventure.
Gary Wurtz moved to the yoop in 2010 an a 18 year old Northern Michigan University freshmen. Marquette was good to him. Now with a previously attained bachelor degree and experience working at golf courses across the Upper Peninsula he now works in his field of study at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. His year is split up with golf in the summer and Nordic skiing in the winter. Gary continues to look for new challenges and the role at KML fits right in with his search. When he is not golfing or skiing Gary enjoys nothing more than camping and waking up in the morning to a good cup of coffee under a tall White Pine. Throw in a loon call from a wilderness lake and he is in his happy place.
